چکیده

The inferior colliculus is notably associated with defensive behavior. Electrical or pharmacological stimulation of the inferior colliculus induces aversive reactions such as running and jumping. Lesion of the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala decreases the threshold of aversive reactions induced by electrical stimulation of the inferior colliculus. The present work examined the influence of microinjections of nefazodone, a serotonin (5-HT 2 ) antagonist, into the basolateral nucleus of amygdala on aversive reactions induced by N -methylD -aspartate (NMDA) microinjected into the inferior colliculus. Rats implanted with cannulae in the inferior colliculus and in the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala were submitted to the open-field test where defensive behaviors were observed. Results indicated that microinjection of nefazodone into the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala increases aversive responses induced by NMDA injections into the inferior colliculus. This result suggests that the inferior colliculus and the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala have a functional relationship on the neural circuitry of defensive behavior. Moreover, 5-HT 2 receptors located at the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala seem to play an inhibitory role on defensive behaviors induced by inferior colliculus stimulation. © 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. Studies of the peripheral olfactory system of the Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus and related decapod crustaceans have helped us understand mechanisms of coding of mixtures, some of which are discussed in this review. Although the number of cells in the lobster’s olfactory system is much lower than in vertebrate olfactory systems, it is a highly complex system. The receptor neurons (RNs...

Ingestion by rats of rat placenta or amniotic fluid enhances opioid-mediated, or partly opioid-mediated, antinociception produced by morphine injection, vaginal or cervical stimulation, late pregnancy, and foot shock. This phenomenon is believed to be produced by a placental opioid-enhancing factor (POEF). Ingestion by rats of human or dolphin placenta has also been shown to enhance opioid anti...

Rats display strong behavioral rhythms during the ovarian cycle. During estrus, food intake is minimal due to a decrease in meal size, and locomotor activity is maximal. To investigate how activity influences feeding patterns across the ovarian cycle, we used a computerized system to monitor spontaneous meal patterns in intact, cycling female rats with and without access to running wheels. We f...

The aim of this article is to review some basic principles of neural coding, with an emphasis on mechanisms of stimulus representation in ensembles of neurons. The theory of “across-neuron response patterns” (ANRPs), first suggested by Thomas Young (1802) and fully developed by Robert Erickson (1963–2000), is summarized and applied to the problem of coding in primary afferent fibers and cortica...
